  KIYOMI KOWALSKI- SOCIAL ENGINEER

EDUCATOR.

Kiyomi deeply believes in the power of a participatory workshop. She never wants to be mistaken for a “lecturer” because she strongly believes that the most transformative work is done when people feel safe enough to engage with the content imperfectly. “Grace” is an ongoing theme in her sessions where she encourages everyone to have compassion for themselves and others. Kiyomi encourages active participation by creating brave spaces for workshop participants to confront their biases openly and honestly with humor and deep empathy for themselves and others.

Based on her work in non-violent communication strategies, Kiyomi coined the phrase “heard people, hear people” because she recognizes that only a person who feels heard has the capacity to take in differing perspectives. Productive dialogue is transformational, and it is Kiyomi’s personal goal for every person to practice engaging in tough conversations that do not dehumanize those who disagree. Coaching people to utilize non-violent communication techniques can be the difference between creating the conditions for someone to evolve their perspective or feeling the need to double down to preserve their dignity.

While Kiyomi is an open book (…perhaps too open?), she does not record many of the workshops that she facilitates to protect the participants who choose to speak frankly during the sessions. Here are a few examples of Kiyomi’s participation as a panelist or moderator.
